Design Brief

In this project, I am tasked with designing a smart study assistant — a cutting-edge device poised to redefine the learning experience. Drawing on the conventional design process of mass-produced products, I recognize the critical journey from initial sketches to intricate hand renderings, ultimately culminating in precise 3D models used for large-scale production.

The Smart Study Assistant must:

  • Make online participation more meaningful

  • Keep tabs when reading digital files

  • Support good study habits for an individual study session

  • Track and displaying study progress over time

  • Have some way of providing feedback to the user

  • Be rendered in a study space (without the user present)

  • Have a theme of our choosing

Design Objectives

My primary focus lies in sculpting the physical form of the smart study assistant. I aim to craft a design that not only embodies functionality but also seamlessly integrates into the user's study environment. This entails meticulous consideration of ergonomics, aesthetics, and the device's interaction within its surroundings.

Envisioning the future trajectory of technology, I foresee smart study assistants emerging as indispensable tools within the educational realm. Through this design undertaking, my objective is to forge a product that not only amplifies learning efficiency but also instills a sense of engagement and empowerment among users.

Target Audience (Persona)

  • 20-year-old Female named Luana

  • 2nd Year Tertiary Student

  • Part-time barista

  • Likes to get study out of the way, so she can spend quality time with people.

  • Motivations: She is motivated by a sense of achievement, also values recognition, family, and learning. She loves coffee and enjoys spending time with friends to get to know them better.

  • Frustrations: She feels that online learning has meant she hasn’t been able to get to know her peers very well. She doesn’t feel that she fits in yet, having just moved to study in a new city.

  • Ideal: Experience – Being able to focus on study and feel like she’s achieved something when she is done.

  • Quote: “I like to listen to music to get in the zone when I study, but I really need something to help me develop better study habits. I also am sick of studying online, and I wish it was more like I was there in the classroom and could interact with someone next to me.”
